My Web 2.0? I’m waiting for the next version

May 15th, 2007 4:38:11 pm pst by Sterling Camden

Engtech tagged me on his original What’s Your Web 2.0? meme.  I’m behind on responding to a few tags and post requests, but I decided to bite this one off first, because it’s the easiest.  In this simple meme, you gather all the “Web 2.0″ sites that you use and classify them based on how frequently you use them.  Then you tag some folks.  It’s that easy.

What’s considered “Web 2.0″ is left somewhat in the eye of the beholder, but basically it’s any place where you can put data out on the web for the FBI to spy on.  So here we go, web 2.0:

Daily use

Occasional use

  • Del.icio.us for, um, just bookmarking
  • Digg and Reddit for helping my friends game the system
  • ResumeBay to review it for Randy (hopefully I won’t ever need a job)

Almost never

  • Twitter for reducing the signal to noise ratio
  • LinkedIn to reconnect with people from whom I escaped long ago

Now for people to tag:

Shelley, Tish, Mohan, Randy, Joseph, apotheon, and anyone else who would like to join in.  Link to this post as well as to the original, then tell us your web 2.0.

The better to read you with, my dear

May 9th, 2007 8:52:24 am pst by Sterling Camden

Yesterday I received two new goodies.  First, my copy of The Ruby Way, second edition, by Hal Fulton arrived.  Randy Morin sent me this tome of wonderful wizardly spells as a “thank you” for suggestions on how to improve his service-in-development, ResumeBay.  Randy is giving out $20 worth of Amazon.com merchandise to the best suggestion each month, so check out ResumeBay and send in your ideas.  Thank you, Randy!

Second, I picked up my new pair of glasses.  As always, I’m adjusting to them — especially the location of the progressive bifocal shift — but my driving has improved, now that I can read street signs again.

On the flip side, I can now distinctly perceive each of my gray hairs. It’s always a trade-off.

Morin’s munificence speaks volumes

May 22nd, 2006 2:32:06 pm pst by Sterling Camden

I just received my copy of Naked Conversations in the mail from Amazon.com.

Randy Charles Morin sent it to me for sending him the best suggestion for the month of April for his new service ResumeBay, which hasn’t quite made it out of pre-alpha yet.

Randy’s still looking for good input, so send him your suggestions to get the free book of your choice! Thanks again, Randy!

I intend to dive right into this little volume after I finish my current read, The Gilded Age, by Mark Twain.

ResumeBay zooms onto the stage

April 28th, 2006 6:03:45 pm pst by Sterling Camden

New on-line service ResumeBay hit the digital streets today, announced here by its author, Randy Charles Morin. It’s pronounced re-zoom-BAY — I asked Randy. I thought it should be re-zoom-EE-bay for a pun on eBay, but Randy thought that might get a little too legally sticky.

Billed as “the first and only open standards Resume and/or Jobs Website”, this “fresh site” is in “pre-alpha”, and plans are to jump straight to release next week! “Don’t need no stinking beta”, says Randy. And here I thought beta = release in Web-too-oh-ish.

Being an independent software development consultant myself, I asked Randy if the site will include free-lance contracting too, or just employment. Just jobs on the search, was the reply, but anyone can build their resume there.

Just to give it a test, I searched for “Software Developer” in my area, and guess what? “Pre-alpha” includes a database! It quickly came up with 20 jobs in the Seattle area, followed by at least a couple of hundred from around the U.S. I didn’t page to the end, and there wasn’t a “last page” link, so I don’t know what the total was. Then I noticed in the small print that results for the search are being drawn from indeed.com. Indeed, that should get a few.

So, on to set up the resume. I registered, got the e-mail and confirmed. Then clicked the link to start entering my information. Got the first page entered and pressed “Save”:

Server Error in ‘/’ Application.
Could not find a part of the path “D:\”.

Oops — I guess it is a “fresh” site. Fresh like chicken — needs a little baking. Obviously from the error message this site is written in .NET. Hope there’s no bias againt Firefox there, Randy. Sent him a message, and he’s working on it.

Randy is offering a free book on Amazon.com for the “most constructive or destructive feedback” on the site each month. Better get your feedback in soon — I’m hoping to lay paws on April’s prize! I’d ask for suggestions on what book to get ($20 limit) but I’d better not be counting the chickens until I get my eggs in one basket.

Thanks and good luck with the new venture, Randy.
