It gets right to the heart of something I’ve been discovering for some time now. It’s easy to assume that good writing must be cultivated, practiced, learned. That assumption leads most writers to think that they must somehow fool their readers into thinking they have a great style or something valuable to say. But good writing is exactly the opposite of layering on appearances. Good writing is about removing pretensions, in order to say only what needs to be said in the clearest possible way.
