Guest who?

March 26th, 2007 11:18:58 am pst by Sterling Camden

Kiltak announced my guest-blogger schedule for Geeks are Sexy Technology News in April (9th to the 15th — hmm, better get my taxes done now).

[GAS] is a perfect tech blog in my book: useful information, great links, no firehose. I’ll be honored to add my little stream to the pot while Kiltak’s away.

Thanks for the opportunity, Kiltak — and here’s hoping for a bug-free conclusion to your wife’s release cycle!

Was glad to see Kiltak finally break away from splogspot and onto his own domain. And naturally my well wishes to the new arrival.

At least at one time I thought “[GAS]” already had multiple authors(?) If so, then why the need for guest bloggers? No offense, Sterling, as I’m sure you’ll fill in admirably with some good posts over there, I’m just confused why a blog with multiple authors would ever need guest bloggers?

I’m part of a couple different group blogs and one of the benefits of group blogging is that if one of us posts less (vacation, time away, etc) the others pick up the slack and vice versa. Maybe these other people who write for [GAS] aren’t very active(?) (anymore?)

I can see bringing in guest bloggers for non time off reasons, promotional, etc, but it seems strange to do that in a group blog dynamic because one of the group is going to be away. In some cases, I could even see that possibly causing some friction among the other group members.

Not saying that will happen here, but there is an interesting dynamic I’ve learned in group blogs. Then again, maybe this isn’t a group blog, which means you can throw out most of what I’ve just written.

Hmm, going to try another comment with a different email address and see if that gets rid of the shadow above.

Hey TD. MyBlogLog looks at the URL to determine what avatar to use. Do you have your MyBlogLog account under makeyougohmm.com?

Regarding [GAS], as I understand it there are multiple contributors, but Kiltak is worried that without his posts there won’t be enough output while he’s gone.

Bets on how long it takes for him to comment here?

  4. sterling says:

Rather, do you have makeyougohmm.com listed as a site under your MyBlogLog account?

  5. TDavid says:

Ahh, I thought maybe you were doing something with gravatars (didn’t look at the code). I pulled the MyBlogLog thing after the whole fiasco with Shoemoney and Y!’s slow loading garbage.

(BTW, your page is hanging still, even after your CSS mods)

I think my php-scripts site is still associated though. Let’s find out.

  6. TDavid says:

Speaking of gravatars, there is a WP plugin I think that will use either gravatar or MyBlogLog:

    see: kamajole.dk/blog/2007/01/12/mbla/

In case you implement it someday, then here’s my gravatar addy :)

  7. sterling says:

Yeah, I tried using javascript to resize the outer div after the page loads, but it didn’t work right away and I ran out of time to look into it further.

  8. sterling says:

I’ll have to look into that sometime. I never got signed up for a gravatar before they closed for expansion.

  9. TDavid says:

One of the cool things about gravatar is somebody actually looks at the avatars and approves them based on a movie-style grading. This way you can set say “PG” and make sure content-appropriate avatars are used.

  10. sterling says:

Looks like gravatar.com is back in biz, so I’ll check it out. Thanks, TD!

Tdavid: The main reason I’m looking for guest bloggers is that most of my contributors only post 2 to 3 times per month.. I’ve been doing 95% of the work for the past 2 months, and to tell you frankly, I’m a bit short winded right now. :) Everyone is busy on their side, and they’re doing everything for free, or almost, so I can’t really blame them!

The site looks great ! Thanks for all your help ( past, present and future !)
