Pup Posting

My earlier post on walking our dog, Halley, drew some warm and fuzzy comments, both on and off line. Seems like puppies are always a popular topic. Since Halley is still recovering from rock extraction, she has some time on her hands, so I thought I’d let her take the keyboard and be our guest blogger for today. Take it away, Halley!

Hi, I’m Halley (SYF). I live on an island with my pet humans: one big male, his mate, and two of their pups.

The big male likes for me to take him on long walks around my territory. I know it’s my territory, because I walk it every day and leave my boundary marks. Sometimes I meet other dogs who have the effrontery to step right onto my turf, but if they say hello in a friendly manner (nice sniff and maybe a lick or two) then I try to be polite about it.

My human insists on taking the leash along. I think maybe he’s afraid of getting separated from me, and then he’d probably get lost. His nose isn’t much good, after all. One of these days I’ll have to take him in to see the doctor (that’s what you call a vet for humans) and see what’s up with that. I hope it isn’t a tumor or something, because then I’d have to weigh the cost and trouble of surgery against letting him live with it. That’s the trouble with humans, they live so dang long that anything they have to bear seems like just forever. And what cry-babies, too. I really think they feel pain a lot worse than we do.

You know, I think we dogs have probably done a great injustice to the human species, keeping them as pets for all these centuries. We’ve bred the usefulness right out of them. Why, they can’t get along without us any more. I’ve heard that my human’s bad nose is not an uncommon problem with the breed, and I can’t say much for their hearing, either. And don’t get me started on their fur. They shed it entirely every day, for goodness sake, and have to put on more! And they’ve got some sort of compulsive thing about bathing every day, too. Bad breeding, I tell you.

So, anyway, I put up with the leash, for his sake. But I have a little fun with him first. I make it into a game — it keeps his mind sharp, you know. He’ll come at me with the leash, and right when he gets there, I’ll dart and go. Then he’ll chase me around the yard. Round and round we go. I know he likes it, because he gets so excited sometimes he just jumps up and down, barking louder than usual. Plus, he calls me by special pet names I never heard him use before — along with unfamiliar adjectives that must be highly complimentary, they’re delivered with such force and style.

But eventually I’ll get tired of playing around and pretend that he won, so we can get along with the walk. Actually, I make it more of a run — he needs the exercise, you know. I’ll get him up to a good gallop, then stop suddenly just to keep him alert. For some reason, he’s never interested in all of the wonderful things I find along the way. Probably has to do with his nose problem. He doesn’t really care to chew things either — I hope he doesn’t have trouble with his teeth, too, for crying out loud.

Chip, I really enjoyed these postings. Have you heard from Walt about them? He would appreciate the one about Halley especially, I think.

[...] This morning I even skipped the morning run with Halley. It was just raining too hard, and I took the opportunity for an extra hour of sleep. Then, when I went out to the garage to let Halley outside, she didn’t even get up. She was lying by the heater I had put there for her, and she raised one eye towards me as if to say, “you’re not really going to make me go out in that mess, are you?” [...]
