When some kid in China republishes one of my articles, it's called plagiarism. When Larry Dignan of ZDNet does it, it's called "showtime". Thanks, Larry — and thanks again to Chad for the idea.

“Showtime”! I’ll have to remember that one!
Actually, it’s not technically plagiarism, since he did credit you as the author of the article. It’s also not plagiarism, because you don’t have rights to what you write for TR (just as I don’t have rights to what I write for TR).
It’s plagiarism if the kid in China copies it but doesn’t credit you.
It’s copyright infringement if the kid in China copies and credits you, since his Website isn’t a C|Net property. Now for the good part:
It’s copyright infringement if you copy it.
How’s that for a screwed up system?
Personally, I’d rather have some kid in China copy my work than anyone at ZDNet, as long as he linked back to the original and gave me credit. It’s not up to me, though.
Er . . . it’s not up to me for “my” articles at TR.
It helps to be clear about these things, I guess.
As usual, you’ve got the rights right — now if only it were right.
. . . and when it’s not right we have to ask: What’s left?
(har har)
Adroitly punned.
[...] Chip Camden pointed me to this excellent list of things to do before deploying a Web site. I consider most of these “duh” items, but it is still good to have them laid out in a simple list with a solid explanation of why each one matters. Pin the bullet point list to your wall and print the full version for your boss. [...]
