I loved that link to “Ed, man! !man ed”, it provided just the laugh I needed before retiring to the confines Gaia Online before I drift off to sleep.
It’s nice to be able to regularly keep up with your blog again. It remains one of the most interesting I’ve found.
I’m glad you’re connected again, Joseph. Thanks for the compliment!
I’m glad too, and you’re welcome.
I liked the link on how to disagree, and am happy “you’re a damn idiot” carries as much weight as something more academic. The other points made about disagreeing online require you to write a dissertation in order to disagree properly. I wonder how many people have time to do that?
I don’t agree.
Sometimes it’s as simple as that statement above. I disagree. If you cannot back up your choice for disagreeing, you need to end the conversation there because, in my experience, if you don’t it usually ends up with insults being flung around and emotions running high.
Whoever descends to insults first, loses the argument IMHO.
Something like Godwin’s Law, eh?
Yeah, a little ahead of the fact.
Well, I think it’s perfectly OK to say “I don’t agree with you, but right now I can’t state exactly why — it just doesn’t feel right.”
What isn’t OK is when a commenter irrationally attacks the author (or a fellow commenter).
Or rather (since there aren’t really any rules online), a commenter can attack someone personally, but it should be recognized for what it is — an argument that carries no real weight.
I could go along with that. (:
