I agree that there’s a problem. I disagree with the broad, sweeping, Ludd-inspired estimation of the causes. Some of the aspects of the suggested causes make sense. Some do not. The implication, for instance, that technical literacy and willful ignorance are somehow directly related is patently absurd.
Blame the rise of video as a “replacement” of textual media if you like, but demonizing non-print media as a whole (including digital textual media) is just asinine.
Yes, I agree. I don’t see how reading from an LCD screen is any less educational than reading from ink on paper. But I do agree that we are trending towards shorter attention spans, which leads to less thorough knowledge and understanding. The technology isn’t to blame for that, but rather what people do with the technology.
