Chipping the web – recursion

Chipping the web

A piece of foam that damaged the heat shield on the leading edge of the wing led to the re-entry destruction of the Space Shuttle Columbia, mission STS-107.  The recent Endeavour mission also experienced heat shield damage from foam-shedding, but thankfully STS-118 returned safely to Earth.

“I don’t understand the thing in Excel where you [verb] the [noun] with your [relative/neighbor] using [ctrl/alt/shift][F7/Enter/NumLock]…” It’s a veritable MadLib of questions of the pattern, “In [Microsoft product of choice], how do I [some important thing that should be easy to do but isn't at all obvious]?”

Million dollar meme

August 27th, 2007 4:21:47 pm pst by Sterling Camden

Happy Memeday.  Tish chatted me up on a meme about how to spend a million dollars.  I should know – of all the money I’ve made in my professional career, I spent almost all of it immediately.

Well, if I had an extra million dollar bill lying around, I’d:

  1. Pay off all debts.
  2. Make a few, well-chosen contributions to charity.
  3. Invest the rest.
  4. Retire — which means only working on the projects I want to work on.

And I sincerely hope that a million dollars finds its way someday to you.

Tagging… oh, anyone who wants to participate.  Remember, failure to participate means that the lucky million dollars is not coming your way.

When posting your response, be sure to copy the list below and add your URL.

What They Do With Their $1 Million

1. SYH will spend for Family
2. Miche will give to the needy

6. Babyfiona will buy house and open business
7. MonkeyWong will go for a long vacation
8. Emila Yusof will realise her dream
9. Mariuca will open a Perfume Gallery
10.Janice Ng will upgrade house and go for long vacation

11.Hin will blog to donate for charity
12.Bobo will invest in property and let her parents go on a holiday.

Oh GR8

August 27th, 2007 11:09:53 am pst by Sterling Camden

Alyx tagged me with the Random 8 meme.   Wait a sec – I’ve done that meme before!  But hey, I’m such a verbal exhibitionist (aka blogger), and it’s the first time I was ever tagged by Alyx, so I’ll respond anyway.  Besides, if it’s truly random, there’s a high probability that I won’t repeat myself, right?

The Rules of this tag:

1. Link to your tagger and post these rules.
2. List eight (8) random facts about yourself.
3. Tag eight people at the end of your post and list their names (linking to them).
4. Let them know they’ve been tagged by leaving them a comment on their blogs.

OK, 8 completely random facts about myself:

  1. My social security number is…

NO WAIT!  Not entirely random — we need some filters here.  Lets try again:

  1. Somewhere I read that you owe it to yourself to own at least one convertible in your lifetime.  I just bought my third one, but it’s been eight years since I sold the second one, so I’m past due.
  2. I grew up in southern Virginia, where my family has lived for about 300 years.  I like to visit, but I don’t think I could ever live there again.  Even as a child, I always felt like a stranger there.
  3. Alyx can’t believe her son is 15 — well my oldest just turned 24.  When I was 24, he was already born.  Take that for feeling old.
  4. Sometimes I feel very young – like I’m just playing at this whole grown-up game.  Shh, don’t tell anyone.
  5. I’m a Backgammon addict.  I could play it all day if I didn’t have more grown-up things to do, like making money.
  6. I used to be taller — I lost more than an inch of height somewhen since age 30.
  7. When I sleep, I snore.  No, I roar.  My wife often has to leave.  I’ve tried everything, even surgery.
  8. Technology and I have a love/hate relationship.  I love gadgets and programming languages, but sometimes I need to get away from it all.  I guess that’s what early morning walks are for.

Now for eight random tags.  Well, they’re not entirely random — I’m avoiding tagging those I tagged the first time on this meme, and also anyone who I think might hurl a virtual brick in my direction because they don’t like memes.  Here we go, and if you start to pick up that brick, please just ignore and forgive:

Heather, Mark, Robert, Randy, Two Write Hands, Joseph, apotheon, and Jenn.

Not just a van man anymore

August 26th, 2007 5:34:38 pm pst by Sterling Camden

For the last eight years, we’ve been a one-car family.  With all of the extra-curricular activities planned for our children’s upcoming school year, we had to change that.  So why not do it with a little style?

Enter 1991 Saab 900 Turbo convertible, black and tan.  It has almost 154,000 miles on it.  Lots of little things wrong with it, the worst of which is no radio.  The engine runs fine, though, and it accelerates and handles well.  It’s only intended for on-island trips anyway, so it will always be within walking distance of home.

Chipping the web – foam

August 22nd, 2007 6:19:25 pm pst by Sterling Camden

Chipping the web Trees of ten:  There are 106 trees that contain ten nodes.

Joseph sort of asked about the title of this series.  “Chipping” can mean to break off small fragments, to engage in witty or teasing discussion, or to put a backspin on your return shot.  All three apply, at least metaphorically.  Plus, “Chip” is my nickname.  Credit for thinking of the title “Chipping the web” goes to Assaf Arkin.

Now you can be an even more effective twit.

TDavid has an excellent follow-on post on how best to violate Jeff Atwood’s blogging cliche list.

Chipping the webOdd combination:  If you multiply the first 4 odd positive integers (1 * 3 * 5 * 7), you get 105.  That makes 105 the double factorial of 7.

Blog gone bad

August 18th, 2007 2:54:06 pm pst by Sterling Camden

Jeff Atwood discusses Thirteen Blog Clichés, common blog practices that tighten Jeff’s jaws.  I’ve been guilty of many of these, and I don’t completely agree with all of Jeff’s assessments.

Calendar widget.  I just removed mine here on Chip’s Quips.  I’ve been meaning to do that for months.  It was useful to me, but not to my readers.  For me, it acted as a visual indicator of how regularly I was posting.  But measurements like that just for my benefit don’t need to be taking up space on the page.  I agree with Jeff on this one.

Excess flair.  The key here is defining “excess”.  I heartily agree that plugins like Snap Shots and Sociable tend to be more bothersome than useful.  But widgets like MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog really do add more functionality to your site than just displaying “pictures of the last 10 visitors to your blog.”  They link you and your readers to other readers of your blog, many of whom are often too shy to comment.  I’ve found many interesting new blogs from these two widgets.

The Giant Blogroll.  Having authored not one, but two such widgets for WordPress, I naturally disagree.  I think your blogroll tells readers a lot about where your attention is going, and provides good suggestions for building their own reading lists.  And I don’t think it’s “spammy” to give some ongoing link-love to the blogs you admire.  That said, it does take up a lot of real estate.  I’m thinking of switching mine to the OPML browser widget with categories initially collapsed.

The Neblous Tag Cloud.  I’m the culprit again!  I’ve authored one of these widgets and I use it on two different blogs.  I don’t know if my readers find it useful, but I often use my tag cloud to quickly locate something I’ve written in the past on a particular topic.  In the image Jeff provides (duplicated here on the right), the tag cloud is pretty much unusable, because the tags of different font sizes overlap each other.  You can prevent that effect with appropriate styling and by limiting the maximum font size used.  When visiting other blogs for the first time, I often look at their tag cloud to get an idea about what topics they write on most often.

This Ain’t Your Diary.  As a few of Jeff’s commenters noted, that depends on the purpose of the blog in question.  Some of them are.  But I’ll agree that if your blog has a defined topic other than being a personal diary, then you need to focus on that subject and avoid including too much personal information.

Top (n) Lists.  Sorry, Jeff.  Readers eat those posts up, because they know what to expect right from the top.  Of course you can overdo it, like anything else.

All of Jeff’s other points provoked my heartfelt “Amen”, especially No Comments Allowed.  I even hate comment hurdles like CAPTCHA or requiring registration, although a blogger’s gotta do what a blogger’s gotta do to control spam.

What do you think?  Does my mile-long tag cloud just bug the hell out of you?  Would you add anything else to Jeff’s list?

Tish tagged me with a relatively simple meme called the Seven P’s.  Keep the bold words, and fill in the rest for yourself.

I’ve decided to answer each of these with the first thing that comes into my mind.

Passion - fruit.

Purpose – less.

Pursuit - of happiness.

Position - hey, this is a G-rated blog.  OK, maybe PG-13, but still.

Pummeling - kind of a thesaurical stretch for a “P” word, isn’t it?  Sure, I’m often guilty myself (witness the title of this post).  So pummel me.

Progress - or regress, it all depends on your egress.

Personality - Skeptical of psychology, but Jung at heart.

Then tag five bloggers.  I’ll tag Stu, Heidi, Randy, Joseph, and Tracy.
